CV Advice

More often than not, at some stage of the recruitment process you will be asked to provide a copy of your Curriculum Vitae to the recruiter or recruiting company. The problem with writing a CV is that there is no right or wrong way. It is extremely subjective, and everyone will have their own opinion as to what makes a good or bad CV.  Before you even put pen to paper, you should first think about the purpose of the CV. What is a CV? What is it meant to achieve? What do I need it to do for me?

It may sound obvious, but your CV serves the purpose of ‘marketing’ your skills and experience to the reader with the sole objective of gaining their attention and leading to your being invited in for an interview. With over 25 years of experience, we have identified a few useful CV writing tips, which if applied should maximise your chances of success.

1. Your CV is a personal document, which within 2-3 pages must not only tell us about your career, but must also give an indication of the type of person you are.
2. Your CV must market and highlight the skills, experience, knowledge and achievements relevant to the position you are applying for. It should provide enough information to make it seem appealing and interesting, but not so much that there is nothing left to ask at interview.
3. Put yourself in the employers’ position. If you were looking to recruit this position, what would you look for in a CV?
4. Tailor your CV according to the role you are applying for.
5. Check all dates, facts and figures.
6. Check for spelling mistakes.
7. Do not use block paragraphs. It is far easier to read smaller paragraphs, with bullet points of key responsibilities and achievements.

Some of these may sound obvious, but these are common mistakes that we regularly see.
